It’s a PJ Party! ExquisiCare Wears Jammies to Work.
Ahhh, there is nothing quite like settling into your most comfortable pair of pajamas to signify the end of a day and to get ready for bed. At ExquisiCare, we take this bedtime ritual to a whole other level!
At 8 pm each night, our staff changes into pjs at work. This practice serves an important function. Individuals with dementia can’t always understand or interpret verbal direction. So, if we say, “it’s time for bed,” that direction may not be followed. However, direction along with visual cues is far more impactful. When our seniors see us in our pajamas, they realize it is time for bed.
We have one resident that wakes up in the middle of the night ready for the day, but when the care team points out that they are all still in pjs, she realizes it’s nighttime and goes back to bed.
Everyone is comfy and cozy while using this PJ party idea to gently keep all our residents on schedule. It’s just one more way ExquisiCare uses every innovative way possible to provide outstanding levels of care to our seniors and our staff.
Okay, I’d love to take credit for idea, but it was actually the daughter of a resident who brought the idea up. It’s a practice in other care homes around the world too. For example, the Old Vicarage Nursing Home in the United Kingdom also has success with this model. The Butterfly Model of Care where emphasis is on residents’ emotional needs first, also advocates for non-pharmacological interventions first. The ExquisiCare “Small Home” model creates true home environments in our 10 bedrooms homes, where getting your jammies on at bedtime is now a natural and normal practice, for everyone.
I bet you thought long-term care homes were boring! Not only do our residents and staff enjoy a great quality of life with physical and mental stimulation appropriate to their needs, we also have a lot of fun whether it’s a senior in care, or a nurse in pajamas. Our focus is our seniors, but getting to wear comfy pjs on the job? Well, that just feels good for everyone!
